Latest Gents caps

A cap is an appearance for a select group, as a school, county or international team in sports. The term comes from the practice in the United Kingdom for the award of a cap (ie an item of headgear) for every player in the international game of football. In the early days of football the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts were not generally accepted, with the result that a team of players often want the region to participate in a variety of different colored t-shirts, and each side would be distinguished from other by wearing a certain type of cap or other headgear.

An early example of the first international football match between England and Scotland in 1872 (below) shows the Scottish players wearing caps and the English wearing a series of school caps. The practice was first approved on 05.10.1886 for football, after a proposal by N. Lane Jackson, founder of the Corinthians:

That all players taking part for England in future international matches be presented with a white silk jacket with red rose embroidered on the front. These are called International Caps.Action for awarding a cap is now international and applied to other sports.

Actual caps are not always (caps for friendly matches still exist, and each player gets one cap per international competition), but the term "cap" for international or other appearance is preserved. Thus, a ceiling set aside for each game played and so a player who has played X games for the team, said to have been capped x times or won x caps.
